Foreword

The Blackland Prairie Concerned Citizens AssociationBPCCA wishes to thank everyone who contributed to this publication.  Many members of the BPCCA spent time in research and information gathering.  Some spent time in development and review of the publication, and others offered their moral support.  Each contribution was unique, valued, and critical to its success.  We also thank the following contributors for information they provided: American Farmland Trust, Texas Cooperative Extension (TAMU),  USDA Report: A Time to Act, Texas Farm Service Agency, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and Texas Natural Resource & Conservation Commission picture.

Historical information was taken from many resources including Swedes in Texas in Words and Pictures, the Swedish Texans by Larry Scott, and various sources on Swedish history found at the Austin History Center. The publication came together very quickly. There are sources where additional information may be available, but we presented information available during this particular snapshot in time.  Also we also welcome any corrections.

Two specific families are highlighted in this publication.   The two families we contacted quickly agreed to prepare their stories.  We know there are many stories to be told from all the good folks who live in the area, each one as unique and wonderful as the two stories shared in this publication.  Look for additional family stories in future publications.

And last, but not least, we save a special thank you for each member of the Blackland Prairie Concerned Citizens Association.  We appreciate each member’s commitment to the mission of the organization and the support of this project.

BPCCA Mission Statement

To ensure the beautiful, endangered, and historic Blackland Prairie of northeast Travis County is preserved. To ensure progressive economic growth meets the requirements of this rural environment and proud heritage.  To ensure our elected and appointed officials understand the citizens of northeast Travis County will not allow the Blackland Prairie to become the dumping ground for Central Texas and other counties.

Thank you, and as the Swedes say, ”Tack så mycket!”
